Electric Drum Set Versus Acoustic Drum Set

When you're first starting out learning how to play drums, you might wonder what the differences between an electric drum set and an acoustic drum set are.

Well, besides the obvious difference of how they're played, there are a few things that are very worth mentioning:

Firstly, the sound factor. If you aren't in a position to play or practice in a loud environment, you won't be able to even play your acoustic set, where if you have an electric set, you can hop on your set and start playing immediately. And by using headphones, you won't have to worry at all about complaints or waking anyone up while you're practicing your drums.

Another plus for electric drum sets is that they are much easier to record from. With acoustic drum sets, you've got to figure out how to record them and work from there. The main reason for this is that you can simply plug in an electric kit and record like that, however, with an acoustic drum set, it will resonate a lot more and cause a lot of static unless you have proper padding and such on the walls to help deflect it.

Acoustic drum sets, however, are definitely better if you're going to play live or with a band. They have a much richer sound and you can just do so many other things that you aren't really able to do with an electric, just because of the way they're built.

In the end, if you're a beginner, I would definitely recommend an electric kit. They don't take up as much space, and can be way more affordable for you to learn on, especially if you're not quite sure if drums are for you. A lot of people start out thinking that they'll absolutely love the drums, but then when they see how much work is involved, they quickly become discouraged and decide otherwise.
